Hampshire is the largest county in South East England. Its county town Winchester was once capital of England, and although political power moved to London centuries ago, Hampshire retains major military bases such as the Royal Navy in Portsmouth and the Army in Aldershot. The county is rich in cultural heritage with strong connections to major English novelists: Charles Dickens was born here, Jane Austen lived in Chawton, and along with Dorset it provides the backdrop to Thomas Hardy’s Wessex novels.
Hampshire enjoys excellent road and rail links to London and is well placed for flights from Heathrow and Gatwick, as well as being convenient for sea crossings to the Continent. Educational standards are above the national average throughout Hampshire in both private and state sector schools.
Its major cities and towns are the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth in the South, and the fast growing business and financial centre of Basingstoke in the north east of the county. These major urban centres act as magnets for hi-tech and knowledge based companies, and offer strong buy to let opportunities. Family homes are available from £350,000 in Basingstoke and Southampton, and rather less in Portsmouth.
However, most of our residential clients chose the area for the quality of life afforded by the county’s beautiful countryside and benign climate. Almost half of Hampshire is covered by the South Downs and New Forest national parks. The area remains popular among walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. Leisure sailors and windsurfers make full use of the attractive Solent coastline.
The affluent cathedral city of Winchester retains its appeal and robust property prices reflect that. To the north, west and east of Winchester there is a wide choice of market towns and surrounding villages. These include Alresford and Bishops Waltham in the Winchester district, and Alton and Petersfield in East Hampshire. The Test Valley district to the west includes Romsey, Kings Somborne and Stockbridge. The New Forest National Park lies south west of Winchester. Its major towns include Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst, Lymington, Ringwood and Fordingbridge. All these are surrounded by smaller towns and villages offering a range of property styles (many with larger gardens than are typically available closer to London) in strikingly beautiful locations.
While it is difficult to provide a summary generalisation for such a large and diverse area, smaller semi-detached houses and bungalows are available from £400,000, and family homes in some areas are available from £550,000. In the prime areas around Winchester, the South Downs and the New Forest, larger/ detached family homes command upwards of £700,000. Country houses with large grounds or estates range from £2 million to £10 million.
